Whether you have had experience with therapy before or are starting for the first time, it can be intensely nerve-wracking to begin. I always find the more information I have up front, the more I feel comfortable moving forward. Here is an outline of what you can expect working with me:
Before You Start
Before you commit to counseling with me, start with a free 20 minute consultation where you can meet me and feel out whether we would be a good fit.
Beginning Therapy
Before your first session, you will complete some paperwork which informs you of your rights in counseling, confidentiality issues, my credentials, the way I conduct therapy, and my rates for counseling/payment information.
Our sessions will be conducted over a secure, confidential and HIPAA compliant tele-health platform.
In our first session or two, we will focus on getting to know each other and I will ask questions to better understand your concern and get a sense of what other resources you have in your life that can support your healing. We will then develop a plan for how to move forward in therapy.
During Therapy
My approach to counseling is laid-back and lightly structured though heavily backed by research and counseling theory. I like to be adaptive and flexible to your needs as each person has unique concerns and heals in their own way. My main focus in counseling is walking with you as you find ultimate fulfillment and meaning in your life (Existential Therapy). I do this by first focusing on developing a relationship that is based on empathy, genuineness and unconditional respect (Person-Centered Therapy). I then seek to support you as you heal by being a sounding board to help you reflect on and sort out internal tensions and conflicting motivations that keep you from realizing your goals (Motivational Interviewing).
Sessions are 50 minutes long and there is no set number of sessions as some concerns can be addressed more quickly and others take more unpacking and longer support. I always begin counseling on a weekly basis in order to develop the relationship, but sessions may be moved to biweekly if we both agree that this is the level of support needed.
For Clients Who are Minors
I have worked extensively with teens and realize that both teens and their parents have an interest in the course of therapy. Guided by the best practices of the counseling profession, I strive to balance the vital role of the parents and the autonomy of teens.
