A Shelter in the Shadow
You are beaten down by a storm of constant overstimulation, not measuring up to the perfect aesthetic, and a barrage of fear-driven messages. But the therapeutic relationship should be a reflection of the abiding shelter of the Lord. My entire practice is built around this concept: safety, rest, refuge and peace tied not to circumstance but to the person of the eternal, unchanging almighty God.
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will abide in the shadow of the Almighty." Psalm 91:1
Toward this end, I primarily operate from a therapeutic framework called Christian Existential Therapy. Though I often borrow tools from other theories, this framework is the underlying structure for my practice. Every part of my approach is founded in Biblical truth and built up by quality theory and research.
Christian Existential Therapy
“All go to one place. All are from the dust, and to dust all return.” Ecclesiastes 3:20
We cannot avoid suffering and we cannot avoid death. Both are inevitable parts of this broken world. We often try to distract and numb ourselves from this reality but it will always barge into our minds with thoughts like: Everything I do is meaningless, everywhere I look is pain. What is the point?
“I have seen everything that is done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind.”
Ecclesiastes 1:14
Death makes life seem meaningless and full of only pain. BUT the reality is that the living, eternal, unchanging God has lived our suffering and conquered death. Thus there is real meaning, purpose and hope to all the suffering that we face. Through his completed work on the cross, the continued work of his Spirit and the hope of his coming kingdom, light and joy is to be found even in the darkest of days. In our therapeutic work, we will face up to your suffering together and discover the meaning and hope that lies inside the safe shelter of the Lord's embrace.
As the Psalm above continues:
"For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler
and from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with his pinions,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness is a shield and buckler."
Psalm 91:3-6
